Hayley Newton Interview

Hayley Newton is a choreographer and personal trainer to the stars. Having worked with the likes of Pixie Lott, Cheryl Cole & Take That, with clients in both London and LA. I sat down for a chat with Hayley about her celebrity clients, life as a personal trainer, choreographer, and how we can all get fit for summer.

Q. How are you?Hayley and Pixie (Exclusive Pic) []
I’m good thank you.

Q. You’re a personal trainer and choreographer to the stars. You’ve worked with the likes of Pixie Lott, Cheryl Cole & Take That. Pixie Lott in particular, how did you meet her and how did you end up becoming her personal trainer?
I actually met her because she trained at the Italia Conti Academy which is where I trained, and I was asked to go back and guest teach some workshops. She would come back and watch the shows as well and she really liked what I choreographed, so she basically said I like what you’ve done, will you come and do my video – and it all went from there really.

Actually, come to think of it we did meet before then actually, training. She wanted to get fit in a dance way so she asked if we could just do classes together and from there she just really enjoyed the routines that I did and asked me to choreograph the video to Nasty.

Q. Yes, you choreographed Pixie’s comeback single Nasty. What was it like?

It was absolutely fabulous, I enjoyed every second of it. It’s a brilliant song and it really inspired me. It wasn’t hard work at all.

Q. I know that you use dance a lot in your workouts. Is that the main technique you use to get your celeb clients in shape?

Yes, definitely. Dance cardio, I do a lot of dance cardio. Toning as well. It’s all about using your own body weight to tone up.

Q. Who has been your favourite celeb to work with?

Well they’re all different aren’t they? Some are more sociable and fun, and some just like to just get down to it. I do have to say that Take That were the most enjoyable to work with though – it was so much fun being on tour with them.

Q. You’re doing a lot at the moment, choreography, personal training. What is a typical day for Hayley Newton?
It’s different everyday. A lot of the time you’ll find me teaching at the Italia Conti Dance centre. I’m their Artistic Director so I pop in and out there three times a week doing fitness classes and/or choreographing for them. Then I’ll probably train one of my clients, and then just working on new projects that are coming up. I’m just about to start working on the choreography for a new video, but I can’t reveal who it’s for right now. Everyday it’s different as there are so many projects that I’m working on and that are coming up – so I don’t have a set schedule.

Q. What are some of the things you’re working on that you can tell me about?IMG_5840
Well actually, I’m coming together with my fiancé who was also a personal trainer too, and we’re both dancers. We actually met on a show 10 years ago as dancers, and then met again in LA as personal trainers. We’re coming together to form a brand called ‘Hayley & Chris’ which we’re going to do a fitness method called Dance Fit. You can see us as Move It this year at Olympia, London on the 7, 8 & 9th of March. It’s so exciting, and I love the fact that I’m going to be working with my other half, and we get to combine our clients and come up with a new method of training. So a lot of fun!

Q. At this time of the year everyone is trying to get fit and healthy. What tips would you give to someone looking to get healthier, lose some weight, tone up and get fit.
I’d say try and incorporate fitness into your way of living. It’s so hard for people in this day and age to find time to go to the gym, so if you can make it your hobby whether it’s like tennis, swimming or zumba it’s great. Usually it’s best doing it with friends because you can say right, let’s meet at this time, because after you’ve done a class you can go for coffee or something. For me, I have to take my dog for a walk everyday so I’ll use that opportunity to go for a jog. My absolute tip for this year would be to try and incorporate exercise into your daily routine, rather than trying to find time to spend hours at the gym that you don’t have. In terms of diet, everything in moderation.

Q. I saw a quote from a magazine saying you sometimes use unusual techniques to get your clients into shape. What are some of the unusual things you do?
Well, I like to try and get some clients try out a bit of pole dancing. It’s something that I’ve done in my career before and I really enjoy it. If they’re really strong and they can lift their own body weight it definitely turns out to be a fun session.
