WTF …”I Pretended To Be Black To Get Into Medical School”
Totally crazy, but totally true… apparently.
Vijay Chokal-Ingam, and American Indian Doctor claims he pretended to be a black man to get into St. Louis University School of Medicine in 1998.
In his book, Almost Black, he describes how between 1998 and 1999 he shaved his head, trimmed his long Indian eyelashes, and applied to medical school as a black person using his middle name, Jojo (his parents were inspired by the African-American basketball player Jo Jo White). He also emphasised that he spent a lot of time in Nigeria as a child in interviews.
So why on earth would he do this?
Well, Vijay said he decided to deceive the university (which is considered fraud) because he had a relatively low Grade Point Average of 3.1. He thought that a lot of US universities were accepting candidates with an African-American backgrounds to show racial diversity within their schools, so decided to “test” his theory by pretending to be black.
Vijay’s revelations have received a lot of online backlash, with many calling writer’s actions “racist”, and a particular article on The Daily Beast described the experiment as “insulting to what black people endure in this country, both institutionally and culturally”.
Some people also believe that the entire story is a bunch of lies (which I agree with) and simply a ploy to generate publicity and get people to read his book that’s yet to be published.
What people will do for fame these days! Crazy stuff.
